Ed Boyden shows how, via the insertion of genes for light-sensitive proteins into brain cells, h is able to selectively activate or de-activate specific neurons. He conducts these selective “on” and “off” protocols through the use of fiber-optic implants. He has a vision for how to best use this knowledge in the development of the human brain.
